  • [Server]Addition to Report System

I want to suggest a little addition to reports system.

As I have seen in the server, and have also read through some old posts in the forums, many players become impatient when it comes to /report. They start spamming administrators regarding the report, specially, if it takes a bit more time for an administrator to handle the report, or the report turns out to be false.

In order to stop this spam, the suggestion here is to bring a bit change to report system.

So this is how it's going to work:
When a /report command is used, 2 variables and 1 string are assigned to the report. One of them is the reporter - the player who reported. 2nd is reported - the player who has been reported. The string will contain the reason of the report.

Afterwards, an admin will verify the /report using /vr [REPORT ID] which will notify the player that his report is being handled by the administrator:

If the player who has been reported, exits the server, then all the players who reported the player will be notified like this:

Please search before posting, already posted many times:

And why would admins have to /vr on all reports from different players against same player

yes, I know it was suggested many times before never has the thread poster been able to clearly explain the suggestion, or provide an alternate solution.

Now you're asking the /vr question, so I think we're getting exactly where I was expecting this suggestion to end up on.

If you don't like the idea of an admin verifying multiple reports against the same player, this can be changed into just /vr [REPORTED ID]. In this case, an admin will just verify against the reported id and all the reports which were against that player will be cleared, and the "reporters" of those reports will be notified.

If the cheater has a friend and noticed there is no admin yet, they can /report their friend and get a notice when admin check it when /vr is used on the reported id. then notice their friend to turn it off privately.

In fact most large system (e.g. steam, facebook, instagram) handle this by notifying the user when action has been taken (like banned/blocked), not when it's being retrieved by the admin/being checked. As we also don't guarantee admins successfully checking the report.

And based on my experience, most players that feels impatient or feels like their report not getting checked start judging the admin action when being taken... E.g. "that guy has cbugged in redzone twice!! why only jail for 1 minute??" and such, which is annoying since those players only wanting the reported player to get punishment so bad.

If the report against the cheater is being handled and one of the reporters was his friend who then tells him privately to turn it off the cheats, isn't that a good thing?
Isn't the whole point of report/kick/ban is to stop the cheaters from cheating?

Also, when the action is taken on the user, every connected player is notified about that already, so we can shove this aside.

Now, that punishment thing you're bringing up. That is upto admins to decide who to punish and how, and admin have all the rights to convey that to the player.

If you are saying that with this feature it could scare cheater, think again... the existence of report command already known to combat cheater (note that i said they may do it when admins are not online), what i explained is just the same to another player yelling for cheater in main chat. The problem is not the cheater that have cheat or not (toggling it), the problem is that another player, either they are saying truly or not, and the admin may get confused as they're being manipulated on which player to take care first, as well having the player disappointed since the report is not being handled quick and accurate. It can be annoying for that player, also the admin but not for the cheater. The same when cheater uses report to another player when they're the one cheating... Admins wouldn't know at first who actually cheated, that's hard to determine.

I'm already saying by my experiences, players who are impatience, or even mad/yelling in chat are the ones who also can't accept admins judgement... While the players that accept admin's action are the one who are wise enough to report and being supportive (not annoying admins to check and punish), which mean for them it's not really necessary. As this suggestion, doesn't guarantee annoying players to stop. Instead it gives more possibility for cheater to avoid more. See those in admin complains or ban appeals, you'll find how those one who are easily offended, blames his friends for reporting them or blames the admin for drama and causes fight instead.

It's indeed good UX design to notify user about their report, but we need to also think what compromises, the user report may not true at all, the admin may not take the report at all, and the reported may not cheated at all. It's actually already good when someone report someone else, they wont know who else reported, this information is keep private until a real action are taken by the admin. Then when action are taken (for cheater, they are kicked), and cookie as reward given in public (shows who reported, even though giving cookie does not only mean that), these reward are not given in public when it's just jail and mute, because it will just end up in argument between them. Also, admins are still free to tell the reporter in private about the report which is being checked.

Shouting "cheater" in main chat is different actually. When a player shouts "cheater" in main chat, he alerts the cheater who then toggles/removes the cheat temporarily, but it also makes everyone aware of that player so everyone is ready to spectate him anytime they wish to.
Also, the false report thing is already happening and there is, unfortunately, no way to stop it from happening. Players are going to continue to make false reports, but with this addition under effect, they will at-least be satisfied that an admin is handling the report, that the report is not being ignored. Players can simply assume that the report turned out to be false and that the "reported" is clean, simply by the fact that no action is taken on the "reported"

The notification will stay among administrators and the "reporter". No one else has to know about it, until the action has been taken after which cookie is given as a reward.

There is no way to stop immature annoying players. No script feature will ever be enough for that.
